Not sure where to start as you prepare for your home’s outdoor transformation? Putting some thought into your needs and preferences before you even meet with us will provide clearer ideas and will ultimately contribute to your satisfaction and the overall results. Here are some hints to get started:
Identifying what is required: • A description of how and when you want to use the space (eg: reading and relaxing, outdoor cooking, dining, entertaining, a play spot for kids or pets, growing flowers or vegetables, etc). Indicate how much time you would want to spend on maintaining the space each week. • Details that would affect overall design (eg: the style / age of your house, sunlight exposure, any existing problems with the topography, privacy needs, existing features you want to keep or remove, etc). • Material preferences (eg: slate, rocks, wood, gravel, stone, concrete, grass, flowers, plants, trees, etc). • What you are looking for in your plantings (eg: privacy, provide food, fragrance, texture, create an oasis, reduce wind or noise, produce flowers, attract birds and wildlife, etc). Include the colours and kinds of plants you like and dislike. • Do you have a theme in mind? (eg: formal, tropical, country, etc). • The mood you want to reflect when using this space (eg: soothing, sheltered, energetic, playful, etc). • Maintenance / utility requirements (shed, paths, fences, parking, garbage bins, etc). • Structures that you would like to include (eg: steps, retaining walls, patio, deck, pool or hot tub, water feature, lighting, play area for kids or pets, etc). Have fun with wishful thinking: Get a better idea of what you want—and don’t want—while ensuring your designer is on the same page. Take time to explore and gather photos of plants, materials, designs, likes and dislikes from magazines, neighbourhood snapshots and websites. Save it all up in a folder for your meeting with us. Scope of work and budget: Indicate the budget that you would like to invest into your landscape. These preparation hints are a great starting point to inspire and clarify what you need and want to change. The next step is to contact Interface and we will make your landscape dream a reality.
