What is mulch?
Mulch is the shredded bark of either cedar or pine trees. Both are a medium brown colour and do not incorporate any recycled materials. Some bagged mulches utilize other compostable materials but tend to be imported, expensive and sold only by the bag. There are a lot of recycled wood waste bulk mulches to be aware of. The larger chips tend not to break down over time. Many of the mulches available today are dyed to cover the product inconsistencies and will dye your hands. We recommend using a natural mulch made directly from the bark of the tree with no recycled ingredients. The benefits of mulch:
How to apply mulch: A 2-4” layer of mulch is a good amount to provide the benefits listed above. If it is the first application over bare soil use a heavier application, and lighter if topping up in the spring. Distribute an even layer throughout the garden bed. Place mulch around plants while leaving about an inch of space between them and the mulch. Mulch is available by the bag or can be ordered in bulk. © Interface Landscape™ 2013
